Consultation on proposed new marine guidance for improved application of the IUCN protected area management categories system

A process has now been running for the past two years to update the original categories guidance material to improve the application of the system as a whole. This has included extensive consultation and a global summit held in Spain last year. A key part of the guidance is new advice on the application of the categories system to different situation, including marine.

New guidance has accordingly been developed for improved application of the categories system in the marine environment. This is the latest version that supersedes text in the recently released third version of the overall guidelines but needs to be read in the context of the full document. The marine guidance is short as it needs to not duplicate material already explained in the full guidance text.

This new ’marine’ guidance will be open to consultation until 12 June 2008. If you wish to respond to this consultation please reply direct to me and copy your response to Naomi Stevenson (Naomi.stevenson@naturalengland.org.uk).

Please use track changes where ever possible and rather than raise issues, please propose text that resolves your concerns. Please be very succinct in any points you wish to raise to help us subsequently handle them.

The full text of the proposed marine guidance can be read online below or downloaded as a word file by clicking here.

The complete version 3 of the new guidance docunment can be downloaded by clicking here. NB this is a large file that may take time to download depending on your connection speed and also note that the marine guidance on this page superceeds the guidance in version 3.

Once finalised the new guidelines will be taken to the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona later this year for approval.
